Cohere and Aleph Alpha in Advanced Merger Talks with German Government Backing

FRANKFURT, April 10 — Canadian artificial intelligence company Cohere and Germany-based Aleph Alpha are in advanced discussions regarding a potential merger, according to a report by German newspaper Handelsblatt.

Citing government and industry sources, the report said the German government supports the potential deal and could become a key customer of the combined entity as part of its broader effort to expand digital public services.

German Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger indicated that a partnership between leading AI companies from Canada and Germany would send a strong signal about international collaboration in artificial intelligence. He also noted that the two countries are already working closely together in the sector.

According to the report, merger discussions began earlier this year and have progressed to an advanced stage. The proposed structure could see the combined company headquartered across both Canada and Germany.

Aleph Alpha stated that engaging in strategic partnership discussions is standard practice in the AI industry and emphasized that it continues to pursue its own independent strategy, declining to comment further on the reported talks. Cohere did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

If completed, the merger would represent a significant cross-border collaboration in the AI sector, potentially strengthening Europe’s position in the global artificial intelligence landscape while deepening transatlantic cooperation.
