ChatGPT Images 2.0 Gains Strong Traction in India, Sees Mixed Global Response

India has emerged as the largest market for ChatGPT Images 2.0 following its recent launch, according to OpenAI. However, early data suggests the feature’s global rollout has delivered more modest gains overall, with uneven adoption across regions.

The latest image-generation upgrade, integrated into ChatGPT, is designed to handle complex prompts and generate highly detailed visuals, including accurate rendering of multilingual text. In India, users have quickly embraced the tool, primarily for creative and personal use cases such as avatars, stylized portraits, and fantasy-themed imagery.

Third-party analytics from Sensor Tower and Similarweb indicate that while the launch drove a measurable increase in downloads, broader engagement growth remained limited. Global app downloads rose by about 11% week-over-week, but daily active users and session activity increased by only around 1%. Web traffic also saw a modest uptick of approximately 1.6% during the same period.

Despite the muted global response, several emerging markets recorded sharper spikes in adoption. Countries such as Pakistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia saw download growth of up to 79% week-over-week, reflecting strong new-user interest following the rollout.

India, however, remains the dominant driver of scale. Estimates suggest the app was downloaded roughly 5 million times in India during launch week, compared with about 2 million downloads in the United States. Engagement growth in India was also slightly higher than the global average, with daily active users rising around 3.4% week-over-week.

Usage patterns in India highlight a distinct trend toward self-expression. Rather than focusing solely on functional outputs, users are leveraging the tool to create visually rich, social media-ready content. This includes transforming everyday photos into studio-style portraits, designing fantasy-themed visuals, and experimenting with creative formats such as tarot-style images, fashion mood boards, and cinematic collages.

OpenAI noted that improvements in rendering non-Latin scripts, including languages such as Hindi and Bengali, have contributed to the feature’s appeal in the region. Additional capabilities, such as generating multiple variations from a single prompt, have further expanded creative possibilities for users.

The rollout also underscores how AI tools are being adopted differently across markets. While India’s large user base is driving overall usage volume, sharper growth in smaller emerging markets points to stronger incremental demand in those regions.

The launch comes amid intensifying competition in the AI image generation space. Rival offerings from companies such as Google have also gained traction, particularly in India, reinforcing the country’s importance as a key battleground for next-generation creative AI tools.

As adoption patterns continue to evolve, early signals suggest that while ChatGPT Images 2.0 is resonating strongly in select markets, its broader global impact may depend on how users integrate these capabilities into everyday digital workflows beyond creative experimentation.
