Latitude Unveils ‘Voyage’ Platform to Power AI-Generated RPG Worlds
AI-native gaming company Latitude has introduced a new platform, Voyage, aimed at transforming how role-playing games are created and experienced. Building on the success of its earlier hit, AI Dungeon, the company is now enabling players to step beyond gameplay and take on the role of game designers themselves.
Voyage is an AI-powered, text-based RPG platform that allows users to create fully customized game worlds using natural language. Instead of relying on pre-built environments or scripted narratives, players can describe their settings—from cities and landscapes to quests, villains, and gameplay mechanics—and the system generates the underlying structure and logic needed to bring those ideas to life. This includes everything from leveling systems and combat rules to character abilities and story arcs.
Unlike traditional RPGs, where interactions are limited to predefined choices, Voyage introduces a fully unscripted experience. Players are free to respond to in-game scenarios in any way they choose, with the AI dynamically generating outcomes and dialogue. This flexibility leads to highly unpredictable and often unconventional interactions. A typical combat scenario, for example, might evolve into a negotiation or even a therapeutic conversation, depending on the player’s input.
At the core of the platform is Latitude’s proprietary World Engine, a system developed over five years that integrates multiple AI models to manage storytelling, gameplay mechanics, and character behavior. The engine is designed to maintain continuity across the game world, tracking relationships, past interactions, and evolving narratives. This enables non-player characters (NPCs) to behave more like persistent individuals rather than scripted entities, remembering past encounters and adapting their responses accordingly.
According to Latitude CEO and co-founder Nick Walton, the goal is to create characters that feel autonomous and lifelike, with their own personalities and backstories that evolve alongside the player’s journey. This represents a significant step forward from earlier AI-driven games, where narrative depth and consistency were often limited.
Voyage also incorporates elements inspired by classic tabletop RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons, including skill-based progression and chance-driven outcomes. Players can unlock new abilities, defeat bosses, and shape their character’s development over time. For those who need guidance, an integrated chatbot can suggest actions or help navigate challenging moments in the story.
The platform has already shown strong early engagement during its beta phase, with testers interacting with more than 160,000 unique AI-generated characters. On average, players have made thousands of gameplay decisions, highlighting the depth and replayability of the system.
Voyage arrives at a time when the gaming industry is increasingly exploring the potential of generative AI. Platforms like Roblox are also investing in AI-driven tools, including multi-agent systems capable of handling complex development workflows such as coding, testing, and character creation. These advancements point toward a future where game development becomes more accessible and collaborative, powered by intelligent systems.
Currently in expanded beta testing, Voyage is expected to enter open beta later this year. As AI continues to reshape interactive entertainment, Latitude’s latest platform signals a shift toward more dynamic, player-driven experiences—where stories are not just played, but created in real time.
