Optus Bolsters Spectrum Strategy with Senior Hire from Telstra
Optus has strengthened its network strategy capabilities with the appointment of Golnar Khomami as Senior Director of Network Technology Standardisation, marking another high-profile hire from rival Telstra.
Strengthening Spectrum and Standards Expertise
Khomami joins Optus after nearly a decade at Telstra, where she served as a spectrum strategist within the carrier’s network engineering team. In her new role, she will focus on advancing Optus’ approach to spectrum regulation, technology standards, and global industry engagement.
Her responsibilities are expected to mirror her previous work, including advising on the efficient use of radio spectrum for mobile and fixed wireless services, while representing the company in international standards forums.
Global Standards Experience
During her tenure at Telstra, Khomami played a key role in shaping spectrum strategy and represented both the company and Australia at global regulatory bodies, including the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector.
She also participated in the 2019 World Radiocommunication Conference, contributing to international discussions on spectrum allocation and policy.
“I’m looking forward to leading the development and adoption of technology standards at Optus,” Khomami said, noting her focus on aligning global innovation with business and customer outcomes.
Reporting Structure and Strategic Role
Khomami will report to Kent Wu, Executive General Manager of Network Strategy and Architecture, as Optus continues to invest in strengthening its technical leadership.
Continued Talent Shift from Telstra
Her appointment follows a broader trend of senior talent moving from Telstra to Optus. Earlier this year, Sri Amirthalingam joined as Chief Technology Officer, succeeding Tony Baird.
The leadership reshuffle comes after a period of operational challenges for Optus, including a network incident that led to emergency call disruptions and prompted a parliamentary inquiry.
Ongoing Leadership and Operational Changes
Optus has also made additional leadership changes, including the recent appointment of Wajid Baryalai as head of operational systems and support (OSS). The move aligns with the company’s efforts to bring network operations management in-house from Nokia.
Positioning for Future Network Innovation
With increasing competition in Australia’s telecommunications sector, Optus’ latest appointment underscores its focus on strengthening expertise in spectrum strategy and global standards—key areas for advancing next-generation network capabilities.
