Reddit Introduces New Measures to Identify Bots and Verify Human Users
Reddit has announced new measures aimed at identifying automated accounts and confirming human users on its platform, as AI-driven activity continues to grow online. The move is part of the company’s effort to improve transparency and maintain trust within its online communities.
Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman stated that the platform will begin clearly labeling automated accounts. These labels will help users understand whether they are interacting with a human or a bot.
As part of the new system, accounts that use automation in approved ways will receive a label such as “[App]”. This label will indicate that the account is operated by software or automation rather than a human user.
The company also announced that developers will be able to register their applications so that automated accounts can receive official labels. This step is intended to ensure transparency while still allowing useful bots to operate on the platform.
In addition, Reddit may require some users to verify that a real human is behind an account. However, the company clarified that it does not plan to collect or display users’ real-world identities. The focus is on confirming human presence while maintaining user privacy.
Reddit had previously introduced verified profiles for brands, publishers, and content creators. These verified accounts are labeled to help users identify authentic profiles and reduce confusion caused by fake or automated accounts.
The new measures reflect a broader trend across social media platforms, as companies respond to the rapid rise of AI-generated content and automated online activity.
With these updates, Reddit aims to create a more transparent and trustworthy platform where users can clearly understand whether they are interacting with humans, brands, or automated systems.
