Sony to Acquire Cinemersive Labs to Boost AI and Visual Computing in Games
Sony has agreed to acquire UK-based AI and computer vision firm Cinemersive Labs, as it looks to strengthen its capabilities in advanced game development technologies.
Cinemersive Labs, known for its work in immersive 3D photography and video for virtual and augmented reality, will join Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Visual Computing Group (VCG). The division focuses on research and engineering aimed at pushing the boundaries of visual computing in gaming.
The company is expected to contribute to Sony’s broader efforts to enhance gameplay visuals and rendering techniques through machine learning, helping deliver more realistic and immersive gaming experiences.
Sony’s Visual Computing Group was formed in 2024 following the integration of AI firm iSize and parts of the Game Platform Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) team. The group brings together specialists in neural networks, generative AI, video processing, and high-performance computing.
The acquisition aligns with Sony’s wider push into AI-driven gaming innovation. Earlier this year, the company patented an “AI-generated ghost player” system, designed to act as an in-game assistant that interacts alongside players, offering guidance similar to a co-op partner.
Other recent patents include technologies that aim to predict player actions to reduce lag, detect frustration through inputs like microphones and controllers, and even mimic player behaviour to identify potential cheaters online.
