South Korea to Invest $166 Million in AI Chip Startup Rebellions
South Korea has announced a major investment of 250 billion won (approximately $166 million) in local AI chip startup Rebellions as part of its strategy to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence and semiconductor industry.
The investment was approved by the advisory board of the Financial Services Commission under the government-backed National Growth Fund, which supports advanced strategic industries. This marks the first direct investment under South Korea’s “K-Nvidia” initiative, a national project aimed at building a globally competitive AI chip company.
Founded in 2020, Rebellions develops Neural Processing Units (NPUs), specialized semiconductor chips designed to handle artificial intelligence computations efficiently. These chips are used in data centers, AI applications, and high-performance computing systems.
The new funding will be used to support mass production of NPU chips and to accelerate the development of next-generation AI semiconductors. The government aims to strengthen domestic chip production and reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor companies.
The K-Nvidia project, led by the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Science and ICT, is part of a broader national strategy to compete in the global AI semiconductor market, which is currently dominated by companies such as Nvidia.
This investment highlights South Korea’s efforts to secure a stronger position in the global AI supply chain as demand for high-performance AI chips continues to grow rapidly.
