TikTok Rolls Out ‘Campus Hub’ to Boost Student Connections and Rival Messaging Platforms
TikTok has introduced a new feature called “Campus Hub,” aimed at helping college students stay connected with their university communities through dedicated group chats and personalized content feeds.
The feature builds on TikTok’s earlier campus verification system, launched last year in partnership with UNiDAYS. Through this system, students can verify their enrollment and link their campus to their profile. Once verified, users gain access to the Campus Hub, which is currently available across more than 6,000 universities.
At the core of the new offering are college-specific group chats that allow up to 300 verified students from the same institution to communicate within a shared space. These chats are designed to facilitate everything from casual conversations to organizing events and staying in touch during academic breaks. While particularly useful over the summer, the feature also positions TikTok as a potential hub for everyday academic and social communication.
In addition to messaging, the Campus Hub introduces personalized college feeds. These feeds surface content from fellow students as well as posts related to campus life, trends, and updates. The goal is to keep users engaged with their university environment, even when they are physically away.
The move reflects TikTok’s broader strategy to deepen user engagement by expanding beyond entertainment into community-driven interactions. By integrating communication features directly into its platform, TikTok is positioning itself as a competitor to messaging and community apps such as Discord, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram.
The concept also echoes the early model of Facebook, which initially focused on college networks and required users to sign up with university email addresses. TikTok’s Campus Hub similarly leverages verified student identities to create more localized and relevant social experiences.
Competition in this space is already intensifying. Meta Platforms Inc. has introduced similar features on Instagram, allowing U.S. students to display their university affiliation and connect with peers from the same institution.
With Campus Hub, TikTok is not just enhancing connectivity—it is attempting to embed itself deeper into students’ daily lives, potentially transforming how younger users communicate, organize, and engage within their academic communities.
