Anthropic Seeks Funding at $900 Billion Valuation, Potentially Surpassing OpenAI
Anthropic is in discussions with investors to raise fresh capital at a valuation of up to $900 billion, a figure that would place it ahead of rival OpenAI and mark a major milestone in the intensifying race among leading AI firms.
According to a source familiar with the matter, talks are ongoing and no term sheet has been finalized. The potential valuation represents a sharp increase from Anthropic’s $380 billion valuation in February, reflecting growing investor confidence in the company’s technology and market position.
Closing the Gap With OpenAI
Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, has been working to catch up with its rival since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022. OpenAI was most recently valued at $852 billion following a record-breaking funding round in March, backed by major investors including Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank.
If completed at the reported level, Anthropic’s new funding round would position it as one of the most valuable private technology companies globally.
Driving Growth Through Advanced AI Models
Anthropic is best known for its Claude family of AI models, which compete directly with OpenAI’s offerings. The company recently launched Claude Opus 4.7, its most advanced widely available model to date.
It also introduced Claude Mythos Preview, a highly specialized model focused on cybersecurity applications. Available only to select enterprise customers, Mythos has drawn significant attention from corporate leaders and policymakers, fueling demand for Anthropic’s technology.
Compute Power at the Center
A key driver behind the fundraising effort is the company’s need for massive computing resources to train and deploy its increasingly sophisticated models.
Anthropic has recently secured major infrastructure partnerships:
- A deal with Amazon that includes up to $25 billion in investment and access to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity
- Additional agreements with Google and Broadcom for another 5 gigawatts of capacity, expected to come online next year
- A separate commitment from Google to invest up to $40 billion in the company
These agreements highlight how access to compute infrastructure has become a critical competitive factor in the AI industry.
Rapid Revenue Growth
Anthropic’s business momentum has accelerated significantly over the past year. The company recently reported reaching $30 billion in annualized revenue, up from approximately $10 billion in revenue last year.
Growth has been driven in part by strong adoption of its AI coding assistant, Claude Code, as well as increasing enterprise demand for advanced AI tools.
